Project : Proposal

Proposal

Digital Media Art

Task: In this trimester, all the Digital Media’s student in Gamma 2 has to create one interactive application. We need to do this application based on the information that we get from all the possibilities places in Pulau Pinang and we have to choose one of the most that suitable places that we will apply to our application. We required going to Pulau Pinang to take an original photos and information from the people who lives in Penang.

Objective: The objective of this project is to make sure that the user of our interactive applications understands about the main historical places in Pulau Pinang so we have to do our application in more details and clear about all the information.

Target Audience: Teenager (18-25)

Location: Pulau Pinang,Malaysia

Theme: Culture Heritage

Specific Place: The Kapitan Keling Mosque

(the Kapitan Keling Mosque)

Specific Research: The Kapitan Keling Mosque is the biggest mosque in George Town, Penang. This mosque was built in year 1800. The founder of this mosque was Indian Muslim culture and that’s why the mosque’s name is The Kapitan Keling Mosque. The original Kapitan Keling mosque was a single-storey structure. The mosque has seen plenty of renovation works. British architects who were commissioned by the Muslim and Hindu Endowments Board gave the Kapitan Keling mosque its British Moghul Revival appearance in year 1916. Location of the mosque is also fortuitous and lined up in the same row, and within walking distance from the Kapitan Keling Mosque. There are the Kuan Yin Temple and the St. George Church a silent reminder of the religious harmony that is sacred to all Penang peoples. Each unique in its own way, but together they represent the intertwined strands of George Town’s populace. A Madrassah (a place where religious classes are held) can also be found within the mosque’s compound. The tall minaret, once used by the muezzin to deliver his call to prayers, is located on the corner of Buckingham and Pitt Street. The Kapitan Keling Mosque underwent its most recent refurnishment in 2003, with a RM5 million grant, as water seepage and poor drainage were affecting the building, closing it down for a year. In this renovation, some alterations that do not compromise on the original aesthetics of the building were included. Among the new extensions was a covered walkway and a women's ablution area. Calligraphy was added to the interior of the main dome and walls, where once these were decorated with foral motifs. An Islamic Information Centre is also set up on the ground floor of the minaret. Another renovation in 1930 gave the Kapitan Keling Mosque its present appearance after the previous design was deemed impractical. In keeping with tradition, the mosque was not rebuilt, but only enlarged. Among the major work during this period included doubling the height of the central prayer hall, improvement to the ventilation system, and allowing more natural light to enter. The exterior is ochre yellowed while the interior had white marble floors and a high ceiling. The interior aisles are formed by a series of horseshoe arches, crowned with King Edward's plaques. The façade of the building and its interior were decorated with geometric designs, as human and animal forms are forbidden in Islam.

Specific Research Method: In this research, I will personally go to Pulau Pinang to take make a research more clearly and accurate about this mosque. I will take a picture of the mosque by myself to make it original pictures and not taken from the internet. While I’m doing this research, I will ask the people who lives in Penang about this mosque whether the history of it or the details of the mosque. I will try to find more information of this mosque by reading a history book or magazine to put in at my application.

Developing Research and Ideas: I will do the culture heritage part to apply it on my interactive application. Besides that, I will do some research in a very details way to make sure that all the information that I get is truth by surfing the internet, searching at a book that has information of this Kapitan Keling Mosque. For primary research, I will go to Pulau Pinang and take a picture by myself so that i can get my original photo and not from the internet. I will ask people around the George Town area about the mosque. After that I will go to the library in Penang to search some information that might I did not get from the people around there.

Time Management

Week 4 –doing my research through internet, magazine and books. I will do my presentation using a web-blog for my idea, concept board, and proposal. This coming Friday I will go to Pulau Pinang to do a primary research and take a picture of Kapitan Keling Mosque. I will ask around the people who lives nearby the kapitan keling section if their know something about the history of the mosque or the environmental around them.

Week 6- Develop more ideas by doing a lot of sketches according to the research that has been done. I will start to create the interaction application within this week.

Week 7- start doing the screen design and digital graphic according to the application that has been started last week which mean week 6.

Week 8- complete all the sketches and digital graphic file to the consultation hour.

Week 9- focus on the application. Make sure that the application has been done around 50 percent.

Week 10- consult to the lecturer and improve all the things that is not satisfied enough for the application

Week 11- last consultation before present the application on week 12. Redo all the things that need to be improved.
