Specific Research: The Acheen Street Mosque in Georgetown Penang also known as Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh was founded in 1808 by Tengku Syed Hussain Al-aidid, a member of the Achehnese Royal of northen Sumatra, Indonesia. Tengku Syed Hussain who moved to Penang with his clan in 1792 was considered by Captain Francis Light as one of the wealthiest men on the island. Besides being established traders, Tengku Syed Hussain and his people were actively involved in spreading Islam in the region, particularly in Penang Island. They had opened a religious school in Acheen Street which became the first Arabic school in the locality. The mosque and its surrounding properties also hosted various business activities including pilgrim brokers, ticketing agencies, bazaar traders, hotel, shop and printing presses.
The area was known as the 'second Jeddah' to the Muslim in the South-East Asia region as it served pilgrims bound for Mekkah, Saudi Arabia. The entire complex is historically and architecturally important as it reflects the earliest Muslim urban community in Penang comprising of the Malays, Indian Muslim, Arabs and the Achehnese. For many years, the area had been an attractive destination for Sumatran immigrants seeking better fortune in Penang. However with the advent of aeroplane and the establishment of the Lembaga Urusan Tabung Haji Malaysia in 1969, the business and pilgrimage activities in the mosque complex gradually died out.
In the 1960, the mosque and their surrounding properties have been endowed for religious and cultural purposed, and it is administered by the Penang State Religious Council. In May 1984, the Acheen Street Mosque was gazetted by the Malaysian Government, under the Antiquities Act of 1976, which then gives some protection and encourages its conversation and preservation. The Acheen Street Mosque as well as other significant monuments and landmarks around the area including Syed Al-Attas Mansion and Armenian Street, Khoo Kongsi Temple and Cannon Square identified as important cultural heritage sites in the sites in the city of Georgetown.
